Rotosound Electric Guitar Strings Review

rotosound

I’d like to preface this review by stating that I am in no way affiliated with or endorsed by Rotosound; not that I would mind it! I felt compelled to write up a brief review for these magical slinky strings after receiving a complimentary set of their “ROTOS” line (Nickel on Steel) with a custom single coil I purchased from Bare Knuckle pickups in the UK.

Rotosound strings have been around for ages (Hendrix himself used to bite into them), but they first came to my attention this past year, after seeing some BluesJamTracks.com-produced videos featuring the strings:

As you can see, if The Master himself endorses them, Rotosound must be doing something right! I know it’s hard to tell much from the sound coming off a YouTube video, but these strings really do sound fantastic. Previously, I had been using GHS Eric Johnson Signature strings (Nickel Rockers), and I was relatively content with them, even going so far as to order more online every time I needed another set for my E.J. Fender strat. I actually had an extra set available to me after switching out my pickup, but I decided to take a small gamble and string it up with the Rotosound 10’s instead. I’m sure glad I did, because damn, these strings sound fat!

I’ve long been well aware of how different any quality acoustic guitar will sound when matched with a proper set of strings, but now I know electrics are no different. The right set can really bring out a completely new character in your axe. After switching to the Rotosound set, I immediately recognized a bigger change in tone than I’ve ever heard between electric light gauge strings. Like I mentioned, the guitar instantly sounded fatter, but the strings also had a lot more snap to them. These would be perfect for achieving a tone every bit as funky as Zillatron: Lord of the Harvest!

Based on the reviews I’ve read, Rotosounds have pretty good longevity, too. Recyclable / biodegradable packaging is a nice bonus, and they even offer 7-string sets for all you Djentlemen out there. Basically, if you’re on the lookout for nicer strings (and you don’t mind risking a whole $5-9 dollars on a new set), string some up next time!
